Why We Are Here :
Leeway was born from a simple belief: jewellery should not be built on imagined or fictional stories, but should feel real, honest, and personal—rooted in true experiences and the depth of lives genuinely lived.
With a background in history, I came to see historical figures not as distant icons, but as human beings—people shaped by emotions, flaws, dreams, and fears, much like us. Their lives are not perfect legends, but real stories of courage, uncertainty, and growth. Leeway transforms these stories into jewellery—pieces inspired not by superstition, but by the truth of lived experience.
When I couldn’t find jewellery that carried this kind of meaning, I created it myself.
The name “Leeway” reflects both my own roots and a deeper idea: that every life, no matter how constrained, holds space for freedom. Even those remembered in history lived within limits, faced failures, and carried imperfections—yet they still found their way, shaped their paths, and created something meaningful.
Leeway is about that space—the quiet freedom we all have to become who we are meant to be. And through each piece, I hope you find your own leeway to write your story, in your own way.
How We Do It
Every Leeway piece begins with research. I start by getting to know each historical figure—their achievements, personality, the world they lived in, and the influences that shaped them. Understanding their story comes before any design begins.
From there, I translate these elements into jewellery—drawing on their ideas, lives, and surroundings to shape the details of each piece.
My aim is to blend this historical inspiration with a modern aesthetic, creating jewellery that truly connects with the wearer while adding a touch of glamour to her look. Each design is thoughtfully made to fit into modern lifestyles, offering a unique sense of glamour—balancing nostalgia with a clean, contemporary feel.
I also carefully balance each piece between statement and everyday wear—so it adds character and lifts an outfit, without overpowering you.
While every design is rooted in real stories, I bring in a touch of magic through gemstones—using semi-precious stones to add depth, colour, and a sense of quiet wonder.
Our Craftsmanship
Leeway is shaped by two places I call home. Based in London, I’m proud to support the local jewellery community, with part of our production taking place in Hatton Garden, where makers focus on bespoke design and high-end jewellery. The other part is crafted in Guangzhou’s Jewellery Quarter in China—another long-established centre of jewellery making, with skilled artisans in each aspect of the jewellery making process, alongside advanced technology widely applied to ensure precision and long-lasting quality.
Both locations bring their own strengths, and by working across them, I’m able to combine different skills, traditions, and expertise to create pieces of lasting quality.
About the Designer
Cindy Lee — and yes, that’s where “Leeway” first began, inspired by both my surname and the idea of finding freedom within life’s limits—and discovering your own path.
I came to London in 2003 as a history graduate. Although my career didn’t follow a traditional path in history, those figures were never far from my life—living in the books I read, the museums I visited, and the quiet moments in between.
Like anyone, I’ve had my share of highs and lows. Time and again, I found strength in the words, experiences, and resilience of people from the past. To me, they were never distant icons, but real sources of inspiration—reminding me that uncertainty, courage, and growth are all part of the journey.
Today, I design each piece from my London studio, shaping ideas by hand—drawing inspiration from the lives of real historical figures, and weaving their wisdom, spirit, struggles, and triumphs into modern designs. My hope is to create jewellery that offers both inspirations rooted in real life stories and a quiet sense of glamour—pieces that not only elevate your everyday, but also express something deeper about who you are and what you believe in.
